“ The Philosophy of Modern Song it could only have been written by Bob Dylan. “The publication of Bob Dylan’s kaleidoscopically brilliant work will be an international celebration of the songs of one of the greatest artists of our time,” said Jonathan Karp, president of Simon & Schuster publishing. One of the most surprising on the list may be the Eagles’ “Witchy Woman” in a 2021 interview, Dylan cited three other Eagles songs as his favorites: “New Kid in Town,” “Life in the Fast Lane” and “Pretty Maids in a Row” (“might be one of the best songs on history,” he said). And the two most recent songs on the list are “It Doesn’t Hurt Anymore,” recorded by Regina Belle in 1989, and Warren Zevon’s “Dirty Life and Times,” from 2003. But most of the songs are from the ’50s to ’70s, a golden age for rock, pop, soul and country.ĭylan then dives into the punk/new wave era with Elvis Costello’s “Pump It Up” and The Clash’s “London Calling”. Blues, R&B and hillbilly songs from the first half of the 20th century have a presence. The oldest song on the list-according to Variety- is Stephen Foster’s “Nelly Was a Lady,” written in 1849, followed by “The Whiffenpoof Song” from the early 20th century. Dylan began work on the book in 2010, including nearly 150 carefully selected photos and writing 66 essays on songs by other artists, from The Who to Elvis Costello, from The Grateful Dead to Nina Simone… But he didn’t put any of the Beatles or the Rolling Stones.Īn official announcement proposes that the book will constitute “a master class in the art and craft of songwriting,” as Dylan “discusses what he calls the easy rhyme trap, discusses how the addition of a single syllable can diminish a song, and it even explains how bluegrass is related to heavy metal.” It was further stated that while the essays “apparently deal with music, they are actually meditations and reflections on the human condition.” two
